Safety Standards

Learn about Buslane's safety requirements including DOT compliance, insurance, driver vetting, and vehicle inspection standards.

Safety is the foundation of every Buslane charter bus trip. We hold our network of bus operators to the highest safety standards in the industry, and we continuously monitor compliance so you can focus on your trip instead of worrying about the ride.

DOT Compliance

Every bus operator in the Buslane network must maintain an active operating authority with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). We verify:

  • USDOT number: Active and in good standing
  • MC (Motor Carrier) number: Valid for passenger transportation
  • Safety rating: Only operators with Satisfactory or better FMCSA safety ratings are accepted into our network
  • Operating authority: Confirmed authorization for the specific routes and states your trip covers

We check these credentials before an operator joins our network and re-verify them on a quarterly basis. If an operator's safety rating drops below our threshold, they are immediately suspended from the platform until the issue is resolved.

Insurance Requirements

All Buslane network operators must carry insurance that meets or exceeds federal minimums:

  • Liability insurance: Minimum $5 million per occurrence for vehicles carrying 16+ passengers
  • Physical damage coverage: Full coverage on all vehicles in the fleet
  • Workers' compensation: Coverage for all drivers and staff as required by state law

We collect and verify certificates of insurance before every booking confirmation. You can request a copy of the operator's insurance certificate for your records at any time.

Driver Vetting

Every driver operating a Buslane trip must meet these requirements:

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL): Valid Class B or Class A CDL with a passenger (P) endorsement
  • Background check: Clean criminal background check conducted within the past 12 months
  • Driving record: No major violations (DUI, reckless driving, license suspensions) in the past 5 years
  • Drug and alcohol testing: Enrolled in a FMCSA-compliant random drug and alcohol testing program
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of commercial passenger vehicle driving experience
  • Medical certification: Current DOT medical examiner's certificate

Operators must provide updated driver documentation annually. Drivers who fail a drug or alcohol test are permanently removed from Buslane trips.

Vehicle Inspection Standards

Every charter bus on the Buslane platform must pass regular safety inspections:

  • Annual DOT inspection: All vehicles must have a current annual inspection sticker as required by FMCSA
  • Pre-trip inspection: Drivers conduct a documented pre-trip inspection before every departure, covering brakes, tires, lights, mirrors, emergency exits, and onboard safety equipment
  • Maintenance records: Operators must maintain detailed service records and make them available upon request
  • Age limits: Vehicles in our network are typically no older than 10 years, though exceptions are made for well-maintained, low-mileage buses that pass all inspections

Onboard Safety Equipment

Every Buslane charter bus is equipped with:

  • Fire extinguishers (inspected and current)
  • First aid kit
  • Emergency exits (clearly marked and functional)
  • Seat belts (on all motorcoach-class vehicles)
  • Emergency reflective triangles
  • Two-way communication between driver and dispatch

How We Monitor Safety

Beyond initial vetting, Buslane uses several ongoing measures to maintain safety standards:

  • Quarterly credential re-verification of all operator DOT numbers, insurance, and safety ratings
  • Post-trip feedback reviews from passengers, with safety concerns escalated immediately
  • FMCSA SaferSys monitoring for any changes to operator safety records
  • Incident reporting protocol requiring operators to report any accident or safety event within 24 hours
