Driver Information and Requirements

Learn what qualifications Buslane charter bus drivers hold, what they do during your trip, hours-of-service rules, and tipping guidance for group travel.

Your driver is the person who will spend the most time with your group on trip day, so it helps to know who is behind the wheel and what to expect. Buslane works only with operators whose drivers meet or exceed federal Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements.

Licensing and Certifications

Every driver operating a Buslane-booked charter bus holds:

  • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or Class B depending on vehicle size
  • A passenger (P) endorsement, which requires a separate written and skills test focused on loading, unloading, and emergency evacuation
  • A school bus (S) endorsement when the trip involves school-age passengers on a yellow school bus
  • A current DOT medical examiner's certificate, renewed at least every two years

Operators keep these credentials on file and Buslane verifies them during onboarding and at regular intervals.

Background Checks and Drug Testing

All drivers go through pre-employment screening that includes a multi-state criminal background check and a motor vehicle record (MVR) review. After hire, they are enrolled in a DOT-compliant random drug and alcohol testing consortium, which conducts unannounced tests throughout the year. Any positive result or refusal removes the driver from service immediately.

Hours of Service

Federal rules limit how long a passenger-carrying driver can be on duty to protect against fatigue:

  • Maximum 10 hours of driving after 8 consecutive hours off duty
  • Maximum 15 hours on duty (driving plus other work) in a single shift
  • Maximum 60 hours on duty in 7 consecutive days, or 70 hours in 8 days

For longer itineraries, we schedule a second driver or build in an off-duty rest break at the halfway point. If your trip pushes into relief-driver territory, your quote will reflect that cost up front.

What Your Driver Does -- and Doesn't Do

Your driver will:

  • Safely operate the vehicle along the agreed route
  • Assist passengers boarding and exiting the bus
  • Load and unload the luggage compartment
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
  • Communicate with your group lead about pickup timing, stops, and route changes

Your driver is not expected to:

  • Personally carry individual bags to hotel rooms or venue entrances
  • Act as a tour guide or provide narration (unless a guided-tour package was booked)
  • Serve food or beverages
  • Supervise passengers off the bus

If you need hands-on luggage service, a narrated tour, or an on-board host, let us know at booking and we will quote the add-on.

Uniforms and Conduct

Drivers arrive in professional attire -- typically a company polo or dress shirt with slacks -- and are expected to maintain a courteous, customer-service-oriented manner throughout the trip. They do not smoke, vape, or consume alcohol while on duty, and they are not permitted to use handheld phones while driving.

Tipping Your Driver

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Common guidance:

  • Short local trips: $20-$50 flat, depending on group size
  • Full-day charters: 10-15% of the base trip cost
  • Multi-day tours: $1-$3 per passenger per day

Some operators include an automatic gratuity of 10-18% on the invoice. Check the line items on your quote -- if gratuity is already added, no additional tip is required (though it is always welcome for exceptional service).

Communicating With Your Driver

You will receive your driver's name and mobile number 24 hours before pickup. We recommend designating one group lead to handle driver communication during the trip so instructions stay clear and consistent.
